Most home offices use a purchased desk — from a furniture retailer, from IKEA, or from a home goods store. A purchased desk comes in standard sizes, often with standard features, and sometimes with some drawers and shelving.
A custom built-in desk is something different. Here is why it matters.
Exact Dimensions for Your Space
A purchased desk comes in 48", 55", or 60" widths. Your home office space has its own dimensions. The desk goes in and there are gaps at the ends, or the desk is too wide and you cannot fully open the door.
A custom built-in is built to the exact width of the wall, alcove, or space it occupies — using every available inch. In a 72"-wide space, the desk is 72" wide. In an alcove with a sloped ceiling on one side, the desk accommodates the slope.
Integrated Storage, Not Afterthought Storage
A purchased desk may have two drawers. If you need more storage, you add additional furniture — a bookshelf here, a filing cabinet there — that was not designed with the desk in mind.
A custom built-in desk is designed with integrated storage: the exact number of drawers you need, shelving at the right heights, a filing section if appropriate, and closed cabinet storage for equipment and supplies — all part of a cohesive design.
Cable Management Built In
A custom desk can include routed cable channels — holes in the desktop for cables to pass through, channels in the desk body that guide cables to a power strip section, and a clean solution that keeps the desk surface cable-free.
Purchased desks occasionally have a grommet or two. A custom built-in can have a complete cable management solution.
Ergonomic Height Specification
Standard desk height is 30 inches — a compromise for an average user. A custom desk can be built at any height. If you are 5'4" or 6'2", a desk built at the ergonomically correct height for your specific anthropometrics is meaningfully more comfortable over an 8-hour workday.
Home Value Addition
A custom built-in desk adds home value. A purchased desk does not. Buyers see a custom built-in and value it. A purchased desk leaves when you do.
