Standard closet design assumes a standard wardrobe. But tall people, people who wear long dresses or formal gowns, and people with extensive suit or coat collections need sections that accommodate the full drop of their clothing — and standard closet systems often fail at this.
Understanding Hanging Drop Requirements
Short-hang (shirts, jackets, folded pants): 36 to 42 inches of drop. Standard double-hang bottom rod height.
Medium-hang (knee-length dresses, long skirts, full suits): 42 to 54 inches of drop. This is where standard single-hang sections often work if the rod is at 66 to 72 inches.
Long-hang (floor-length dresses, formal gowns, full-length coats): 54 to 68+ inches of drop. This requires a single-hang section with a rod height of 72 to 78 inches and no shelf or lower rod below.
Very tall clothing (tall people's dress shirts and slacks): Tall individuals (6'2" and above) may find that their dress shirts and slacks require more drop than a standard short-hang section provides, especially with longer shirts.
How Custom Design Accommodates This
A custom closet designed for a wardrobe with significant long-hang requirements allocates dedicated full-height single-hang sections of appropriate size. Unlike standard systems that may only have one full-height section, a custom design can proportion multiple full-height sections based on how many long items the wardrobe contains.
Rod heights are also specified for the user — a person who is 5'2" hanging clothes at 72 inches has difficulty reaching the back of the rod. A person who is 6'2" can reach a rod at 80 inches comfortably. Custom design accommodates the actual user.
