Special occasion clothing — wedding dresses, tuxedos, formal gowns, military dress uniforms, and performance costumes — has properties that make storage more complex than everyday clothing. It is expensive, emotionally significant, worn infrequently, and needs to be in perfect condition when needed.
Wedding Dress Storage
A wedding dress presents the most common special occasion storage challenge. After the wedding, the dress typically lives in the original preservation box — sealed, in a climate-controlled area. If the dress has been preserved by a professional, following their specific storage recommendations is essential.
For preserved wedding dresses, a dedicated storage position in a climate-controlled closet — never the attic or garage — is appropriate. The box should be stored flat (not on its side) on a shelf that can support the weight.
Tuxedos and Formal Suits
Tuxedos and formal suits worn occasionally but kept long-term should be:
- Cleaned and pressed before storage (wearing oils and residue degrade fabric over time)
- Covered with a breathable garment bag (not plastic dry-cleaning bags, which trap moisture)
- Hung in a section of the closet with adequate spacing — not crushed between other garments
Formal Gowns and Evening Wear
Long formal gowns need the same full-drop hanging space as any long garment, plus protection from crushing. A dedicated full-height section of the closet with garment bag coverage keeps formal gowns in condition between events.
For gowns with fragile embellishments (beading, sequins, lace), a breathable garment bag that completely covers the gown protects against snagging during access and storage.
What Not to Do
- Do not store in a non-climate-controlled attic or garage (temperature extremes and humidity damage fabrics)
- Do not use plastic dry-cleaning bags for long-term storage (moisture trap)
- Do not hang heavy gowns without proper shoulder support (fabric stretches over time under weight)
- Do not store without cleaning (stains set; body oils degrade fabric)
