Advantages: Pantry storage uses deeper shelving appropriate for bulk items. More cubic footage per dollar than kitchen cabinetry. Allows zone organization that kitchen cabinets cannot accommodate. Can be located adjacent to but outside the kitchen work triangle.
Disadvantages: Requires available floor space adjacent to the kitchen. May require walking a few steps to access.
When to Choose Kitchen Cabinet Extension
- The kitchen has bare wall space that could accommodate cabinets
- The storage need is for dishes, glasses, and kitchen equipment rather than food storage
- Kitchen continuity is aesthetically important
When to Choose a Custom Pantry
- Food storage is the primary need — canned goods, dry goods, bulk purchases
- A closet or room adjacent to the kitchen is available
- You want organized zone-based storage with pull-out shelves
- Budget is a consideration — pantry storage costs less per square foot than kitchen cabinetry
