When Quad Cities homeowners decide to finally do something about their garage, most start with one project — either epoxy flooring or cabinets — and eventually circle back to do the other one later. This is more expensive and results in a worse-looking finished garage than doing both at the same time.

The Right Sequence
If you are doing both epoxy flooring and garage cabinets, epoxy goes first. Always. Here is why:
Epoxy requires a fully cleared garage. The garage floor must be completely empty for surface preparation — grinding or acid etching — and application. If cabinets are already installed, clearing the floor means working around or temporarily removing the cabinets.
Cabinet installation scratches fresh epoxy. Cabinet legs and installation equipment dragged across a newly coated floor damages the epoxy surface. When cabinets are installed after the epoxy has fully cured (typically two to five days), they can be set carefully and the floor beneath them is still clean.
Cabinet legs are sealed in the epoxy coat. Some installers prefer to set cabinet bases directly on the concrete before epoxy is applied, so the epoxy runs under and around the bases. This creates a completely sealed, seamless look with no gap at the base.
The workflow is more efficient. Having both the flooring contractor and the cabinet installation scheduled in the same week means one disruption rather than two, the garage is only emptied once, and the finished product is ready in the same timeline.
The Cost Benefit
Doing both at the same time reduces your total project disruption cost — the one-time effort of clearing the garage, renting storage, and living without garage access. You also avoid the situation where one project immediately damages the other.
