Here is how to approach spring garage organization for a smooth summer season.
The Winter Clearout
Start by pulling out everything that belongs to winter and is done for the season. Snow shovels, ice melt, salt spreaders, snow blowers, and winter automotive supplies move to secondary storage or to a designated winter zone in the back of the garage or on upper shelves.
This is also the time to evaluate winter gear. Is the ice melt container worth storing? Are the snow shovels in good condition for next winter? Discard worn items before they take up storage space for another 8 months.
The Summer Setup
Summer equipment comes out and moves to the most accessible positions:
- Lawn mower and lawn care equipment on clear floor space near the door
- Bikes on wall hooks at accessible height
- Outdoor sports equipment on slat wall or in a dedicated bin section
- Patio cushions and outdoor furniture covers in an accessible cabinet
The summer setup should anticipate what is pulled out frequently. Bikes used every weekend need to be as easy to access as possible. Camping gear used once a season can be in a secondary position.
The Lawn and Garden Zone
Spring is when the lawn and garden supplies expand. Fertilizers, seeds, garden tools, and hoses that have been stored since fall come back into use. A dedicated garden zone — tools on wall hooks, chemicals in a closed cabinet, hoses on a hanger — keeps lawn and garden organized as the season intensifies.
