The laundry room is not a room most people design with care. It is where laundry happens — a functional requirement squeezed into whatever space the floor plan allowed. Most are either the dedicated laundry room variety with a washer and dryer side by side and not much else, or the stacked-in-a-closet variety with even less room.
Here are the layout ideas that actually improve the experience.
Layout Idea 1: Counter Over Front-Load Machines
Front-load washer and dryer sets with pedestals create a horizontal surface at counter height. Custom cabinetry that frames and tops this surface creates a dedicated folding area that is ergonomically correct — no bending over a traditional dryer door.
The combination of front-load machines with pedestal drawers for laundry supply storage and a custom counter on top is one of the most functional laundry room configurations available without any structural change to the room.
Layout Idea 2: Upper Cabinets Above Side-by-Side
Side-by-side top-load or front-load machines typically have 12 to 18 inches of wall clearance above them. Upper cabinets in this space — even shallow 12-inch-deep cabinets — provide significant storage for laundry supplies, cleaning chemicals, and household paper goods.
In most Quad Cities homes, the area above the washer and dryer is completely unused. Converting it to upper cabinet storage is one of the highest-ROI improvements in a laundry room.
Layout Idea 3: Hamper Pull-Outs
Rather than sorting laundry in the machine or on the floor, hamper pull-outs — divided bins that roll out of a base cabinet section — allow pre-sorting. Lights, darks, and delicates in separate hampers means laundry day is a matter of pulling out the appropriate bin and loading the machine.
This is particularly valuable for families with multiple household members who generate separate laundry loads.
Layout Idea 4: Hanging Rod for Delicates
A fixed or retractable hanging rod above the washer or in a separate section of the laundry room provides a place for items that need to air dry or cannot go in the dryer. Without a dedicated rod, these items end up on door handles, shower curtain rods, and chairs throughout the house.
Layout Idea 5: Dedicated Ironing Station
An ironing board mounted to the wall — fold-down or fixed — with a nearby outlet and a hook for the iron creates a functional ironing station that does not require clearing space somewhere else in the house every time pressing is needed.
