Most people have never had a custom closet design consultation before. Not knowing what to expect can make the process feel more intimidating than it needs to be. Here is exactly what happens — from the moment the designer arrives to when they leave.
The Meeting Starts With a Conversation
The designer does not arrive with a measuring tape and immediately start measuring walls. The consultation starts with a conversation.
Your designer will ask: What is frustrating about the current closet? What do you wish it did that it does not? How do you use the space? What categories of items live here? Are you sharing this closet, and if so, how should the space be divided?
These questions inform the design. A closet that holds the same square footage can be organized in dozens of different ways — and the right way depends on how you specifically live.
The Wardrobe Discussion
For a closet consultation, your designer will ask about your wardrobe in more detail: How many items hang? Are most hanging items shorter (shirts) or longer (dresses, gowns)? How many shoes? Do you need more drawer storage or shelf storage?
You do not need to have exact counts — estimates are fine. But the more specific you can be, the more accurately the designer can allocate each type of storage.
The Measurement
After the conversation, the designer measures every wall of the closet with precision — width, height, and depth at each wall segment, noting outlets, vents, light switches, doors, and any other features that affect the layout.
This measurement process typically takes 10 to 20 minutes for a standard closet. Larger or more complex spaces take longer.
The Design Review (Separate Appointment)
At Comfort Concepts QCA, the design is created after the consultation and delivered for review at a follow-up meeting — either in person or digitally. You see a visual rendering of the proposed layout before anything is ordered.
This is not how all companies operate. Some present a design immediately during the consultation, which limits the care that goes into it. We prefer to review measurements and wardrobe information carefully and present a thoughtful design.
What You Leave With
You leave the consultation having shared your needs with a professional designer who has precise measurements of your space. In the following days, you receive a design rendering and a quote. You review, request revisions if needed, and approve when you are satisfied.
