A mudroom project in Le Claire, Iowa (itself a Mississippi River town) shows the solution: one locker per person with hooks at reachable heights, overhead baskets that swap contents by season, a bench for pulling boots and sandals on and off, and shoe cubbies below. Shiplap backing was chosen there because it takes abuse and wipes clean — exactly the finish a dripping-swimsuit entry needs.
The design principle carries over directly: give every person and every category of gear one specific home, and the towel pile at the door stops forming.
Water Gear Storage That Stays Off the Floor
Paddles, skis, fishing rods, and coolers store best on walls, not floors. In a garage project in Eldridge, Iowa, slatwall panels put every tool and both bikes at eye level on hooks that reconfigure in seconds — the same panels handle water sports gear just as well. Closed cabinets there were mounted high off the slab because garage floors get wet; at a lake property, where gear comes in dripping, that raised-cabinet detail is even more valuable. The whole system installed in two days and returned both parking spots to the cars.
