Storage Challenges in Blue Grass Homes
Blue Grass mixes older farmhouse-style homes near the historic town center with newer subdivisions built from the 1990s through the 2010s as the Quad Cities metro has grown outward along Highway 130. The newer homes share a common pattern: good square footage, builder-grade wire shelving in every closet, and garages that quietly become the household’s overflow storage. The older homes have the opposite problem — solid construction, but closets sized for a different era’s wardrobe.
For the commuting families who make up much of Blue Grass, the two highest-impact projects are usually the garage-entry drop zone — a mudroom system that catches coats, boots, backpacks, and sports gear before they spread through the house — and reach-in closet upgrades that double capacity inside the existing walls.
What a Family Mudroom Actually Looks Like
A recent mudroom project in Le Claire shows the approach. Five people shared four wall hooks: coats buried coats, the shoe pile crept across the floor, and every school morning began with a hunt for the second glove. We measured coats-per-person, counted the shoe rotation, and sized one locker per family member — with kids’ hooks set lower, because if a six-year-old cannot reach the hook, the floor is the hook.
The finished system gives each person a labeled zone: hooks inside their locker, a basket overhead for seasonal small stuff, and shoe cubbies under a bench deep enough to actually sit on. Shiplap backing takes the winter scuffs and wipes clean. Installed in one day — and the morning exit stopped being a scavenger hunt.
