The Challenge
Deep wire shelves swallowed everything past the front row. Cans expired in the back, duplicates piled up because nothing could be found, and the small appliances — toaster, coffee maker, mixer — colonized the kitchen counters because the pantry had no home for them.
The Vision
A pantry that works like a small shop: everything front-facing and visible, a dedicated counter to run the coffee maker and toaster off the kitchen island, and baskets that make "put it away" a five-second job.
The Design Process
We shallowed up the shelving — a pantry shelf deeper than a cereal box just hides food. Upper shelves went shallow and closely spaced for canisters and cans; a butcher-block counter at standing height became the appliance station, with outlets planned in; deep storage moved into woven pull-out baskets below, where depth is an asset instead of a trap.
The Transformation
Every shelf now shows its whole contents at a glance. The coffee station moved off the kitchen counter and into the pantry, taking the toaster with it. Bulk and bagged goods dropped into labeled baskets. The weekly shop goes away in minutes, and the kitchen counters finally stay clear.

Designer Insights
Why We Designed It This Way
Why the shelves got shallower, not deeper
Depth is the enemy in a pantry. A 12-inch shelf you can read beats a 20-inch shelf you have to excavate.
Why the counter sits at standing height
It is a work station, not a display ledge — pouring coffee and loading the mixer happen standing up.
Why baskets live below the counter
Low + deep is perfect for heavy bulk goods: they slide out to you, and lifting happens from a safe height.
“Experienced installers, very knowledgeable. Bought a new home and they overhauled my whole house! Lockers, closets, office, pantry and laundry! Highly recommended.”
